Here’s what Indian musicians had to say about Coldplay coming to town
From 25k to free, the merry go round of ticket prices of Coldplay’s upcoming concert sends fans into a frenzy. Indian musicians hail the move.
It’s confirmed now. The tickets to the first-ever performance of the British band Coldplay in India, will be for free. The band is expected to headline the annual Global Citizen Festival on November 19 in Mumbai and fans can hope to win free tickets in return for proven work in the field of education, equality, and sanitation. The organisers have announced, “Starting Monday, tickets to the Global Citizen Festival in India can be earned through the new platform by signing up to become a Global Citizen and completing the festival’s action campaigns at GlobalCitizen.IN.”

Musicians in India say that using music to create social awareness is a great idea. “I have never heard a band take up such an innovative initiative to promote social awareness. We have often heard about guest passes for backstage etc, but never heard of an entire concert being free,” says Sonam Sherpa, guitarist of the Delhi-based band, Parikrama. Surojit Dev, member of Them Clones band agrees, “It’s a unique initiative indeed and we can replicate this format in India. However, you need a band as big as Coldplay to attract the masses. In India, many bands would have to come together to create this kind of a buzz.”
Interestingly, the show will be held on World Toilet Day, with the intention to draw attention towards sanitation problems in India. Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International says, “If a band like Coldplay is coming to India on World Toilet Day and giving free tickets to those who work for the cause of sanitation, then it’s very good. This will increase the acceptance of toilet culture in the country.” he says.
Meanwhile...
Rumours were rife that the tickets of Coldplay’s concert would be priced at Rs. 25000. This made way for a series of mocking tweets. An internet user, @Trendulkar wrote, “Looks like Coldplay is selling tickets at South Mumbai per sq. ft rate.” @absolutelydanny wrote, “The only people who can afford tickets to Coldplay are Kapil Sharma and the BMC.” @thatobesewoman, wrote, “Feeling sorry for all those people who sold kidney to buy iPhone and now have to sell iPhone to buy tickets.”
